We Love: Paulrose Products

We’re in danger of singing the Naked and Famous guys’ praises too much, what with our recent coverage of their new retail store and new products, plus their little brother brand, The Unbranded Brand. But hell, this sub-label is worth talking about, so here we go:

We noticed Paulrose Products back at Capsule Vegas 2010 where the first pieces got a soft launch. It is a Canadian-made workwear company originally established by Paul and Rose Svarc (the grandparents of Brandon Svarc from Naked & Famous) in Montreal, Quebec in the 1960s.

Brandon says: “Paul was a great man and the patriarch of our family. After WW2 he immigrated to Canada and built an apparel and workwear business to support his family. Without him, Naked & Famous Denim would not exist.

After he passed away, my father was looking through his office to find anything of sentimental value, and he found an old metal and wooden die stamp from the original Paulrose brand! He showed it to me and I instantly knew that we must create a revival of this old brand in my grandfather’s honour. Approximately 50 years after the original launch of this brand of workwear, we have done exactly that.”

Using Japanese denims & fabrics, the items are still made in Canada using the details and techniques that we expect from a quality heritage brand.

The first delivery of jeans were made of 17oz unsanforized slub selvedge denim. The denim has an irregular warp size and is woven at a dangerously low tension in order to achieve the beautiful and old-school texture and appearance. All jeans come with flannel lined rear pockets and flannel pocket bags with copper hidden rivets on the rear pockets and a concealed selvedge coin pocket. Added reinforcement is applied using Union Special 43200G bulldog chain-stitched hems & waistbands.

The jeans are offered in two fits: the Heritage fit & Modern fit. The Heritage fit is similar to a 1947 Levi’s 501 classic Americana fit, while the Modern fit is a slim tapered leg similar to Naked & Famous’ Weird Guy fit but with a touch higher rise. Shirting will be offered in quality Japanese fabrics with a slim fit and minimal details.
