Before iPads, smartphones and Twitter, the fashion-obssessed got their fix through MTV’s House of Style - a mini-show that aired from 1989-1999. The series’ hosts were none other than the powerhouses of the 90s supermodel craze, including Cindy Crawford, Rebecca Romijn and Molly Sims. House of Style allowed those outside the inner circle fashion and music world to see their icons in intimate settings, letting their guard down. Naomi Campbell walked around covered in zit cream, Gwen Stefani worked out on a treadmill and called herself a “loser from Anaheim,” and a much meeker 19-year old Kate Moss spoke about her favorite body parts.
The show fizzled out and was shelved for over a decade, only to be re-born on the Internet in MTV’s Style section. While viewers can now watch the old episodes and reminisce, MTV’s latest news that the show will return this October as a web series with new hosts is truly a treat. Karlie Kloss with Joan Smalls will be the new faces romping around backstage to interview their fellow models and other style muses. They recently teamed up for dual covers of V Magazine’s July 2012 issue, so their partnership seems all the more fitting and of-the-moment. The show is sure to provide an intimate view of a fashion world that has become so hyper-marketed and over-analyzed that “reality” has lost its meaning. One needs to look no farther than the teaser video Kloss and Smalls made after getting their feet wet at the VMA’s on September 6th to see that they, too, are excited to bring House of Style back for an encore.
