French favorite Chloé is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year (1952-2012) with a retrospective exhibit at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo- Chloé. Attitudes- that will explore the brand’s rich legacy in a non-chronological format, examining the contributions of each and every designer who has worked at its helm from founder Gaby Anghion to Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and current Creative Director Claire Waight Keller.
Founded with the idea of an elegant yet insouciant, relaxed wardrobe for the modern woman under Anghion, Chloé’s first fashion show took place at Paris’ renowned left-bank Café de Flore in 1956. This original renegade spirit continued throughout the decades under the direction of designers ranging from Gérard Pipart, Maxime de la Falaise, Karl Lagerfeld, and Martine Sitbon to [Stella McCartney], Phoebe Philo, and Hannah MacGibbon, with the exhibit featuring some 70 pieces that touch on the legacy of each designer. Unpublished and unexhibited croquis drawings, and photos by the likes of Deborah Turbeville, Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, and more will accompany the garments.
In addition, Chloé will be reissuing 16 iconic pieces that “…have launched trends and long waiting lists” from the archives including 7 accessories (1960 – 2009) to be available in Chloé stores from February 2013, dubbed the Anniversary Edition. From Anghion’s “Embrun” jersey dress of 1960 to Karl Lagerfeld’s Violin Dress (S/S ’83), Stella McCartney’s Pineapple T-shirt (S/S ’01), and Phoebe Philo’s Paddington bag (S/S ’05), there will be two as-yet-unnamed limited edition pieces with only 60 available.
Below, a selection of the pieces to be included in the anniversary collection, illustrated by Sandra Suy/courtesy of Chloe. Visit the site for the stories behind each piece, and be sure to stop by the Palais de Tokyo from 29 September – 19 November 2012 for a peek at fashion history.
