LONDON: Barking Bathhouse

One of the quirkiest and most exciting spa projects we have heard of in a while, the Barking Bathhouse in East London is due to open next week fusing a creative mix of social enterprise, sustainability, architecture and art. Finished just in time for the Olympics, the pop-up spa is a project by arts agency CREATE and Something & Son (the clever people behind Dalston project FARM: Shop) and is part of the Create Festival and London Cultural Olympiad. The 6000 sq ft. spa is a fusion between a 20th- century working men’s bathhouse and contemporary spa, with massage and treatment rooms, a sauna as well as a sub-zero temperature ice room- complete with iced tiles and pillars. The spa will also house a bar and relaxation area serving healthy cocktails, smoothies and juices using produce from local allotment gardens wherever possible. We particularly like the sound of the ceiling cucumber plants, with customers being able to pick their own cucumbers- convenient to use as a cocktail ingredient and/ or as a spa component when having a facial. The Barking Bathhouse will serve as a community wellbeing centre and will also host various events including philosophy seminars, laughter yoga and clowning workshops. – Anna Jacobsen
