I really do believe that one of the main purposes of fashion is to bring beauty into people’s lives. We wear clothes to cover our bodies and for warmth and other practical purposes, but such mundane concerns are really secondary. The best clothes – including many reasonably priced ones – are really wearable pieces of art. This artistic view of fashion is clearly the favored view here in Paris – the beauty of the city and its people are mirrored on the runways. The venues for the shows even seem chosen for maximum beauty, rather than practicality. Yesterday, John Galliano showed his Christian Dior collection in a tent in the Jardin des Tuileries…Isabel Marant showed nearby in a tent on the banks of the Seine, directly underneath the Eiffel Tower. In such settings, can beauty and art ever be far from your thoughts? x Eddie
