Vivienne Westwood Red Label S/S 2013

TWISTED LADY
London: In what was one of her most wearable collections yet, Vivienne Westwood presented ladylike looks with a subtle twist. Sure, there were uneven necklines and asymmetrical gathering, but these jacquard dresses, prim sweaters, capri pants, and pleated skirts were straightforward enough to wear to the office or to a cocktail event without raising any eyebrows. This signaled a major shift for Westwood, who is known for her unconventional yet savagely beautiful clothing. Westwood saved her irreverence for the hair and makeup. The models’ disturbingly perfect coifs (many were wigs) were partially powdered grey or dyed odd colors, like lavender. Faces were painted lime green, red and pink and featured aggressive teal eye shadow. One can’t help but miss Westwood’s typical kookiness in the clothes, though they will certainly appeal to a broader audience and most likely increase her bottom line. No one can argue with that. –Joanna Manganaro
