Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood S/S 2013

QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH
Paris: Vivienne Westwood presented her spring collection at the home of the British ambassador to France, which was appropriate not only because of the designer’s nationality, but also because the theme of Britishness that ran through the show. From the queenly tiaras to the Victorian bustiers to the patterns inspired by Baroque textiles, Westwood’s homeland was a strong presence. And of course, there was the quintessentially British quirkiness. Silly hats, striking face paint, and Troll doll-inspired hair added the off-kilter element one expects from a Westwood show. In recent years, the designer has become an advocate for ending climate change, and she titled her show “Climate Revolution”. Aside from a shirt and tote bag emblazoned with the slogan, the theme of climate awareness wasn’t apparent in the collection. It was more of an ode to Britishness, and it was pure Westwood fun. –Joanna Manganaro
