COASTAL KITSCH
Paris: A Thom Browne presentation is nothing without its theatrics, and for S/S 13 the designer borrowed heavily from the metallic-painted street performers well known in tourist cities across the globe. Staged with models coated in reflective silver arriving to stand in metal brogues affixed to individual platforms, the actual clothing could also fit right in at a tourist trap, namely any coastal destination near Cape Cod. An acidic layered explosion of madras suiting, garish checked blazers, cropped cotton trousers and pastel intarsia knits served as Browne’s perversion of classic Northeastern prep, a subculture where the designer’s whale prints and lobster appliqué would be worn un-ironically. In Paris though, the look was straight kitsch, its humor only amplified by the serious nature of stone-faced, anonymously gilded mannequins. — Nina Stotler
