New York: Despite the intricate details and luxury fabrics of Rodarte’s S/S 13 show, the presentation as a whole was surprisingly casual (or at least wearable) for such experimental designers. Shiny minidresses crafted from lurex crochet or glimmering brocade would be at home in any late-night club and silk t-shirts and shell tops are restrained enough for daytime. Accessibility did not preclude thematic invention, and the Rodarte sisters seemingly took a trip to the Renaissance fair this season, as the medieval references grew increasingly literal as the presentation progressed. From breastplate fold details and swashbuckling laced leather trousers to abstracted appliqué crests and corset belts, this was a world of modern day warrior princesses.—Nina Stotler
