RENAISSANCE WOMAN
New York: Roberto Cavalli cited the Florentine Renaissance as the main influence behind his Pre-Fall collection. References to the era were visible in the filigreed prints, the opulent beading, and the show-stopping accessories, but the offering also had a wild side, with a strong emphasis on alluring furs. Both faux and real versions of beaver, stone fox, lapin, and kidassia were in heavy rotation. Cavalli also cleverly styled real fur pieces with items featuring a photorealistic print of the same type of fur. Sharp tailoring and clean lines made it all feel pulled-together and contemporary. The skin-baring looks of seasons past were mostly absent this time around; sleeves were long, and hemlines hovered near the knee. It was a welcome change, as the luxe pelts and eye-catching motifs made the pieces seductive enough on their own. –Joanna Manganaro
