BOARDING SCHOOL SUBVERSIVE
Paris: The boyish sensibility popping up on so many runways this season was sure to appear in Raf Simons’ S/S 13 collection as well, and the designer didn’t disappoint with cropped shorts, white boarding school button-downs and basic suiting. But with Simons the trends of the season always feature a dash of subversion, and these signature twists appeared as slit vents, elongated, pointy collars, pleating, and abstract face graphics similar to those he used recently at Jil Sander. The merger of feminine and masculine was also Simons’ concern with soft pastel tones throughout, as well as the presentation of a bold floral coat worn almost like a housedress but paired with a boy’s wide trousers and chunky sneakers. Sweetly adolescent yet challengingly intellectual, S/S 13 proved a directional par for the course for beloved provocateur Raf Simons. — Nina Stotler
