REFINED INTARSIA
Milan: Marco de Vincenzo continued to wipe his slate clean this season, finding new ways to refine the knitwear he made a splash with last Spring. The drama of his painted cable knits was sublimated for S/S 13 into low-key intarsia tank dresses and tops with a swirling abstract landscape illustration rendered in earth shades of pumice or shimmering gunmetal. The accompanying pieces were sporty: crisp cotton shorts, silk a-line skirts and slim trousers, all accessorized by cap-toe heels fitted with an elastic panel. Although de Vincenzo was smart to keep every silhouette simple, some of his silk items seemed bland in contrast to the dimensional knits and trapeze peplum tops were unflatteringly wide. But as this relative newcomer evolves it is certain he is consistently breaking new ground with intarsia, lending the technique a fresh sophistication and creative eye.—Nina Stotler
