EXUBERANT LACE
New York: The second ready-to-wear collection from stylist Katharine Polk tackled color and texture with gusto, abandoning the strictness of Fall via exuberant head-to-toe lace ensembles and pumped up florals. Relaxed trouser suits were bold, whether rendered in an enormous ikat scattered with lace appliqué or hallucinatory black brocade. Perhaps in deference to such scene-stealing materials and patterns, dress silhouettes remained simple, with both long and short sleeveless sheaths emerging as must-haves. Polk’s comfortable, slouchy direction didn’t work quite as well for evening gowns in champagne lamé, but such missteps are already rare for this fledgling label.—Nina Stotler
