POP CULTURE PRAYER
Paris: Riccardo Tisci’s love of religious iconography is a longstanding fact, but one more often expressed via his women’s collections. In recent seasons, Givenchy’s menswear has concentrated on mainstream graphic imagery like snarling dogs and tropical florals. But for S/S 13, Tisci let his pop culture and Catholic inclinations merge, rendering classic haloed Madonnas as punchy photo prints on satin t-shirts, bomber jackets and tunics, while sneaking in more subtle nods to the church with stiff white priest collars. Papal robes and skirts became knee-length white a-line jackets, flowing and layered organza tops, or crisp cotton shirting with elongated tails. Despite these storied references, the collection remained pure Tisci modernism, the heaviness of his inspirations streamlined by sporty brocade sweatshirts, sharply tailored trousers and chain-embellished athletic sandals destined for spring’s retailer wait lists.— Nina Stotler
