Georges Hobeika – Haute Couture S/S 2013

FIRST BLOOM
Paris: Georges Hobeika delivered a Spring/Summer mood in the purest sense for this aptly entitled collection, Peace Blossom. The relationship between the eternally feminine and nature in bloom was expressed in diaphanous dresses that observed the contours of the body and evoked a sense of youth and rebirth. Spring seemed just around the corner in the soft pinks, greens and blues that made up a delicate color palette. Skirt shapes and hemlines varied; some dresses grazed the floor while others hovered above the knee (and a couple were layered over narrow pants — a key proportion this Couture season).  While many gowns recalled vintage Hollywood with elongated trumpet skirts, flouncy peplums and off-the-shoulder necklines, a few flirty and whimsical mini-dresses served as a girlish counterbalance. Piece after piece were embellished with Swarovski crystals, pearls and sequins, or dimensional flower appliqués and paillettes that cascaded down skirts and fluttered up bodices; these decorated pieces were most charming when mixed with a watercolor rose print. The focal point of each dress was the natural waist, marked by a narrow self-covered belt. Georges Hobeika is a favorite among stars and starlets — among them Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and Glee’s Jayma Mays, who wore one of these creations at this weekend’s Sag Awards. — Sharon Graubard
