AUSPICIOUS AUGURY
Paris: At not even 30, Gareth Pugh has already managed to construct his own language when it comes to his designs – he stays true to his sharply-tailored jackets and bondaged leather no matter what – which can be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it is a vision unique to his eye; a curse because it is often hard to imagine how that singular vision can continue to grow. Pugh’s Fall 2011 collection hinted at what might be the the label’s lifeblood: a marriage of structure and fluidity that has the potential to be a source of constant renewal for the designer’s Goth leanings. Along with the the expected Pugh offerings, there were dresses in the color-of-the-moment electric blue that had more than a touch of softness to them; one gold sequin dress with matching leggings even had a flirty attitude about it. The strong sense of movement infused into the collection contrasted nicely against the more rigid and imposing creations. Overall, it was an auspicious showing for a designer that surely has a long career ahead of him.
