JEWEL OF THE CROWN
Milan: Religious reverence came around again as it usually does for Fall at Dolce & Gabbana, this time interpreted as more royal than rustic. Opening on dramatic Renaissance mosaic print dresses, the collection quickly established the crown as it’s symbolic throughline with heavy gold headpieces an accessory for throne-ready crystal embroidered dresses as well as the grey flannel skirt suits of a civilized parishioner. No matter their social status, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s woman adorned herself with all the riches of a Vatican coffer, cinching the most simple cotton blouse with gemstone corset belts or pairing sheer organza dresses in heretic red with ceremonial rosary medallions. Amid all this piled-on ornamentation, the most charming pieces were the youngest, and little cropped tops in a t-shirt shape and a-line sheath dresses became the true gems of the season.—Nina Stotler
