TO SICILY, WITH LOVE
Milan: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana once again mined the rich cultural history of Sicily for their collection this season. Prints for the opening looks featured the Roman army, which conquered and lost Sicily several times throughout its years. Other motifs depicted portraits of men of different races, representing the many cultures that have laid claim to the island at one time or another. Colorful headscarves and dangling beaded earrings were a nod to Sicilian gypsies, which are a regular theme in the label’s lexicon. In addition to slicker silk looks, the design duo offered items with a sense of humility – macramé separates, printed burlap dresses, and even wicker corsets. This passionate ode to the triumphs and difficulties of Sicily, realized over the course of a whopping 87 looks, was Dolce & Gabbana in top form. –Joanna Manganaro
