MIXED MESSAGES
Paris: Japanese designer Atsuro Tayama juggled many ideas in his spring collection. There were the dark and drape-y looks that opened the show. With filmy lace and touches of leather, they had a gothic feel. Tayama added in a couple lacy knits, then moved on to a series of camouflage. Pieced denim was next on the list, and it was probably the most successful idea in the show. Tayama used a range of tones, from whitened blues to dark, raw denim. Frayed edges gave looks a casual nonchalance. The final series was all about tie-dying. Tayama kept his slouchy silhouette consistent throughout the show; it was the only element that held the erratic collection together. –Joanna Manganaro
