Ashish F/W 2013

WORKING GIRLS
London: “A visually ironic take on urban/rural work wear” was how Ashish Gupta described his current fall collection. Irony has always been a key element in Ashish’s cheeky collections, so this season’s offering should resonate with the quirky label’s followers. Gupta opened the show with a neon yellow work vest that mimicked the high-visibility versions worn by road crews, except this one was made from pavé sequins. The pants it was styled with featured ergonomic patches in graphic shapes. The designer went on to piece trompe l’oeil suspender belts onto sweaters and sweatshirts. Durable nylon was used for anoraks and roomy pants, and denim, one of the original workwear fabrics, appeared in the second half of the show. Gupta used a variety of washes and pieced them together for overall dresses and a range of separates. Houndtooth patterns, checks, and plaids – though not necessarily connected to the workwear theme – popped up throughout. Created with Gupta’s signature sequins, the patterns added sophistication and shine. –Joanna Manganaro
