NEW MATH
London: Scrunchies, stone-washed denim, and Reebok classics – it was a 90s revival at Ashish. For his muses, he chose math geeks, who were “more concerned with quadratic equations than the number of ply in a cashmere sweater.” To illustrate their devotion to arithmetic, numbers were embroidered onto white button-up shirts and baggy jeans. The designer incorporated his signature sequins for many looks, putting his own spin on the retro styles. Asymmetry was a key element; some garments were slashed vertically and reattached with contrasting material, resulting in light denim pieced with black sequin-encrusted material or heather grey jersey. Collars, sleeves, and hemlines were purposefully uneven, giving the collection a charmingly off-kilter feel. –Joanna Manganaro
