A DOMESTIC VISIONARY
New York: It takes a visionary like Joseph Altuzarra to filter a trend as rugged as heritage workwear onto a high-fashion runway or to refresh the stiletto gladiator sandal so perfectly that the Balenciaga or Chanel versions from a few years ago become a distant memory. For S/S 13 he has done both, creating masculine engineer stripe denim jackets in delightfully unexpected hourglass silhouettes and sturdy brown leather gladiator heels embellished with playfully beaded Greek leaves. To accompany a parade of excellent outerwear, Altuzarra dreamed up body hugging knit dresses and wrapped pencil skirts trimmed with swinging fringe, intriguingly abstract mineral prints and metal paillettes arranged like armored fish scales. Fantastically detailed yet progressively sophisticated, the Mediterranean-influenced collection was as imaginative as anything produced by today’s top fashion talents and a testament to the potential of New York-based designers.—Nina Stotler
