SHE’S A GEM
Paris: For F/W 12, designer Alexis Mabille imagined “women as jewels.” The result was quite literal; the palette consisted of gem tones ranging from amethyst to onyx to garnet, and embellishments consisted of pearls and chunky rhinestones. The season’s necessary elements were present — floor-length capes, silky velvet and shapely volume — as well as the matte textures and minimalist silhouettes that seem to be gaining ground in the over-the-top world of couture. Drama was not forgotten, several looks featured copious amounts of frothy, gathered tulle. —Anna Jane Davis
