BATTLE SCARRED
New York: Alexander Wang’s sharp urban uniforms often seem like armor, a protective layer of chic attitude for fashion-forward young women. For S/S 13 the reference was immediately apparent, manifested via zippered jackets embellished with hard leather shells, banded leather boots firmly strapped around the calves and slick cotton tunics executed with almost medical precision. But chinks in the armor began to appear and the graphic lines of Wang’s sexy new garter sandals were mirrored by slashed crocodile t-shirts and disconnected sleeves, an effect which progressed until sheath dresses were literally ripped to shreds. Luckily, several sporty referees were also on hand to call the designer’s fantasy-fashion battle, outfitted in round football-inspired tops, umpire vests and brimmed patent leather caps.—Nina Stotler
