Unveiled recently at the Berlin International Film Festival, The Grandmasters is the dazzling new film by Hong Kong-born director Wong Kar Wai, depicting the life of martial arts master Yip Man.
Highly stylized and set in the 1930s, the film’s aesthetic comes courtesy of Los Angeles-based cinematographer, Philippe Le Sourd whose visual style “merges Chinese aesthetics with subatomic reality”, explains Cultural Critic at The Huffington Post, Lisa Paul Streitfeld.
Through a series of film noir and fight sequences, the film follows Yip Man from his early years and the marriage to his wife Cheung Wing-sing, right through to his death in 1972.
