New Media: Pitchfork and Bat For Lashes

On release of Natasha Khan’s latest Bat For Lashes album The Haunted Man, Chicago-based music website Pitchfork has published an online article, which incorporates clever editorial design and an enhanced visual narrative to engage the reader.

The digitized story, entitled “Glitter in the Dark,” was written by music journalist Laura Snapes and features black and white studio photographs by Shawn Brackbill. Brackbill’s photographs cleverly and subtly move in the style of animated GIFs as the reader scrolls down through the piece, bringing the piece to life without being overly distracting. In addition to the copy and imagery, a playlist of selected songs from The Haunted Man compliment the content and can be turned off or on as the user wishes.

As publishing continues to move into digital realms, this project successfully indicates how editorial design and content for the web can be fully engaging without being overpowering. Read it here. – Samantha Fox
