Art & Design: Lotus Dome by Studio Roosegaarde

A new installation by Dutch design lab Studio Roosegaarde responds to the presence of nearby people.

Residing in Sainte Marie Madeleine Church in Lille, Lotus Dome is made out of hundreds of foil flowers, created from a special polyester film. The dome is fitted with smart sensors that track people’s movements and prompt small lights inside the shape to light up and shine accordingly.  The lights react with the foil flowers, making them open up and undulate, almost mimicking nature.  When no one is present within the space, the dome appears motionless.

“We call it a soft machine, with half animal qualities and half technological qualities,” explains lead designer Daan Roosegaarde.

Lotus Dome has been commissioned for Fantastic 2012, an immersive festival that will take over the streets of Lille, France in November through January 13, 2013.  Keep reading Stylesight for our coverage of Fantastic 2012. – Samantha Fox
