Changing pace from the somewhat hapless princesses of Disney’s past, Brave launches a new type of heroine into the world. Scottish, red-headed and skilled with a bow and arrow, Princess Merida faces a ferocious bear and stares down some unseemly suitors. Calling back to the admirable Mulan, Merida finds adventure while trying to accomplish her fate, helped by a witch bearing a magical tart. The movie opens in theaters today and we’re already impressed with the strong heroine and stunning images.
