Earlier this year at Levi’s S/S 13 press event, we were given a sneak preview into the forthcoming collaboration between Levi’s and Liberty. All that was shared was a single black umbrella floating above a crest of flowers with a vague intro on a small plaque beneath. Finally, this month Levi’s has begun to release images and roll-out press previews across the States and U.K., introducing the highly anticipated line.
Yesterday (Tuesday, Jan. 29), Levi’s hosted a press preview of their exciting collaborative collection with world-renowned and long-established London department store, Liberty’s. Held in Liberty’s private Heritage Suite, the collection of Levi’s denims and exclusive Liberty prints were presented among a bespoke floral display and the stores iconic oak backdrop.
The small capsule collection, due S/S 13, pairs Levi’s classic silhouettes and denims with Liberty’s iconic prints — both of which the two brands have used since the late 18th-century. The pieces have been produced with the quality and design everyone has come to expect from these two honest, hard working companies.
The 15 piece collection balances Levi’s vintage denim silhouettes, like trucker vests and high-rise skinnies, along with some more contemporary, fun and flirty shapes like chambray skater skirts and mid-riff vests. Each design beautifully marries the heritage of the two iconic brands, blending Liberty’s punchy florals against Levi’s soft indigo denims.
The hero print, Carlin (named after Levi’s designer who headed the collaboration) features a hand-painted, 1970s multi-floral watercolor design from Liberty’s archive. The pattern has been redesigned and recolored to create an exclusive print for the S/S 13 collection. The second print, Kerr Bandana is based on a 1940s painting, also from the Liberty archive. Inspired by the pointillist painting style, the design uses a laser technology to recreate the dot bandana pattern in a subtle tonal indigo effect.
One of the key pieces from the line is a Western shirt that plays with floral fabric blocking on the yoke. More understated pieces like a shrunken denim jacket work on subtle print highlights with simple removable linings, or a cropped boyfriend pant with floral inserts at the cuff and bound seams. Meanwhile, the standout laser, Kerr Bandana design is worked across cropped 5-pocket styles and cute cut-off shorts as an allover or localized pattern. Other items include a sweet prairie style dress and sporty pop-over cagoule.
