The British Fashion Council announced its nominees for the 2012 British Fashion Awards at the Savoy Hotel on Monday, September 3rd. Most of London’s heavy hitters in the fashion world made the shortlist, showing the wide range of forward-thinking talent that has been bubbling up in the city over the past few years. The winners will be announced on November 27th at a ceremony hosted by British TV personalities Lauren Laverne and Nick Grimshaw.
Designer of the Year, the most coveted award, has Christopher Kane, Mary Kantrantzou and Stella McCartney vying for the title. All three designers were Stylesight “Best Of” picks during our F/W 12 runway coverage, and McCartney won the BFC’s Red Carpet award in 2011. Kantrantzou quickly moved up the ranks from her Emerging Talent – Womenswear award win last year, along with Kane, who took home the New Establishment prize.
This year’s New Establishment award, which began in 2011 and honors a designer who has gained global accolades over the course of two seasons, has Erdem, Jonathan Saunders and Meadham Kirchhoff as nominees. This is a banner year for Saunders, who won the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund prize back in January. But this won’t seal a victory for Saunders; Erdem took home the same prize in 2010 and Kirchhoff was a fellow nominee in 2011.
Burberry’s Christopher Bailey and Stella McCartney are the getting the biggest buzz this year; each designer is up for two awards. But the new names and burgeoning talent are definitely worth following. JW Anderson, Agi & Sam and Jordan Askill are duking it out with other influential designers for various Emerging Talent awards.
