Call us late, but better late than never. Although we’ve been fans of Serge Lutens‘ fragrance creations for a while, we’ve just discovered his highly-edited collection of makeup essentials launched in collaboration with Shiseido in 2005. The line includes foundation, blusher, eyeshadow, mascara, 10 lipsticks and nail varnish. Lutens’ favorite is the kohl eye liner. It’s “an answer to what I’ve been looking for years. It took 10 years to perfect. It’s like a pencil without a lead that gives you very defined eyes for a long lasting look. There is no problem if you make a mistake thanks to the applicator. Personally I like to wear it in the traditional way – on top of my eyelids.”
But what really hooked us was the less-is-more packaging. Black lacquered geometric shapes, minimalist and futuristic but glamorous, and weighted for a truly luxe feel. The super discreet, refillable packaging was inspired by his legendary fragrance, Nombre Noir, created for Shiseido in 1982. “Distribution is extremely selective.. rare is for rare people,” explains Lutens.
Serge Lutens was born in 1942 in France. A photographer, filmmaker, hair stylist, perfumer, and fashion designer, he began his career in beauty as a hair-stylist at 14 years old. He moved into makeup and was commissioned by Christian Dior to launch their makeup line in 1967 and became recognized for his art direction and photography for Shiseido in the 1980s. He went on to launch his eponymous beauty line of luxury perfumes and makeup in 2000.
