The US Open of Tennis Kickoff!

The US Open of Tennis is a very special time of year for the Active Team. We LOVE tennis, eat tennis and breathe tennis. So, when we typically begin to see the billboards and advertisements plastered all over New York City streets and subways during late August, our little Active hearts beat with excitement….

Every season something special happens…a witty tennis campaign from one of our favorite brands, an eventful party…or even a limited release of innovative product. THIS year we’ve seen a wide spread of amazing initiatives. However, we thought it would be interesting to present our “Top Three Take Aways” from the US Open and highlight what we love thus far as an official kickoff!

1. VENUS & SERENA WILLIAMS’ NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE COVER:

Words can’t express how beautiful the two Williams sisters look on the cover of The New York Times Magazine from Sunday, August 26th 2012. The black and white image is a stunning reflection of an athlete’s purity – showcasing the women’s incredible physique and hard work, sweat and tears the professional tennis players must endure.

2. DEBUT OF THE NIKE SB CHALLENGE COURT & VIDEO OF GINO IANNUCCI AND JOHN MCENROE:

Last week Nike unveiled its SB Challenge Court kick and video that featured Mr. John McEnroe, our favorite (and one of the most influential) tennis players in the world. Here’s what Nike had to say about the sneaker and vid: “Tapping the original 1984 Nike Challenge Court, its ambassador McEnroe, and of course skateboarding for inspiration, Gino Iannucci reinvents the iconic tennis sneaker, which debuts in a short film featuring the two Nike legends.”

3. DARKER PALETTES ACROSS ATHLETES’ LOOKS:

Looks for top seed professional tennis athletes are drenched in darker color palettes – an apparel and footwear trend we couldn’t ignore when we first started to see images from various brands on our computer screens over the past few weeks. Nike has three of its players steering towards the dark with Roger Federer and Serena Williams outfitted in shades of regal navy while Maria Shapova’s nighttime ensemble consists of a black tennis dress and black kicks. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are equally sporting shades of darker blues and greys from their sponsors UNIQLO and adidas, respectively. And, Caroline Wozniacki opted for an all black kit from head-to-toe.

Stay tuned for a full report in the forthcoming weeks….more surely to come!
