New Book: The Printed Square by Nicky Albretchsen

Selection of plates from The Printed Square

The beautiful images featured in new Thames & Hudson publication The Printed Square are not only beautiful examples of print design, but further fuel our interest in scarf prints for all areas of Womenswear.

This new release focusses on vintage handkerchief is a visual feast that features over 200 beautifully designed handkerchiefs that have been selected to reflect the magnificent array of printed designs that emerged between the 1920s and 1950s. The book is a great reference for print and includes a wealth of information on fabrics used, a detailing of the design characteristics of each decade, information on where to find and collect, and advice on conservation, storage and use.

Author Nicky Albretchsen who is also the author of acclaimed book Scarves and runs a vintage resource service from London’s Brick Lane said that she was inspired to produce the book:

“Because fashion has such a fast turnover, designers are constantly seeking new ideas, and vintage designs are particularly useful inspiration because copyright only lasts for twenty-five years. Vintage handkerchiefs are absolutely beautiful but normally only found in ones or twos, so grouping them together in a book creates a useful resource and makes a stronger impact”

This would be a great resource for any print designer and of course scarf collector.
